The Ellisbridge police arrested a youth accused of attempting to snatch a chain from a woman near Pritamnagar in the early hours of Saturday,even as the other accused the son of a policeman managed to escape.
Ravi Rajput is a jobless youth from the Danapith slums,while Latif Halas father Abdul is a constable with the Vastrapur police,the police said.
They said the victim,Shilpa Shah (62),a resident of Pritamnagar,was walking near the Sadhna School when the two motorcycle-borne youths attempted to snatch the chain from her neck. But they failed as they lost balance on a speed-breaker. On their second attempt,the victim shouted for help,which gathered a crowd.
Investigating Officer Inspector J B Gadhvi said: The people caught hold of Rajput and handed him over to the police. The mob had turned violent. We arrested Rajput immediately and helped the old woman reach home safely. Hala had fled from the spot.
He added: Hala was previously involved in chain snatching cases at Maninagar in 2007. He was serving his jail term under PASA till December. He came out of jail recently and has again got back to snatching chains. His elder brother is serving term in jail for an attempted murder.
The police have booked Rajput for an attempted theft and have initiated efforts to arrest Hala.
