Ahmedabad sees 50% drop in fireworks-related emergency calls

Last year,there were about 68 to 72 emergency calls,out of which 40 to 45 were related to firework emergency.

The number of fireworks-related emergency calls in Ahmedabad dropped by 50% this year compared to last year during Diwali,indicating the possibility of fewer people having burst crackers this time.

“From October 31 to November 6,a total of 77 emergency calls were received out of which firework emergency cases were only 27. However,there were 58 fire calls,while 19 were rescue calls. Last year,there were about 68 to 72 emergency calls,out of which 40 to 45 were related to firework emergency. Though the number of emergency calls have increased this year,but there was a 50% decrease in the cases of firework emergencies,” said Rajesh Bhatt,Additional Chief Fire Officer of Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Services.

“No casualty has been reported this year. Awareness campaigns to reduce bursting crackers and saving environment by Gujarat State Disaster Management and Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation have been fruitful.” Bhatt added.

“Our employees were able to celebrate Diwali first time with their family because of less emergencies. The cases of fireworks that came up were because of negligence in housekeeping or improper disposal of waste,” Bhatt added.

The GVK EMRI,which runs the 108 emergency services received record emergency calls of 3,239 on New Year this time,highest in the past 6 years. However,the percentage of burn cases was low.

“Out of 5,000 calls that we received on New Year,3,239 were emergency cases,the highest in past six years. Moreover,36 assault cases,5 fire burn cases,84 trauma cases have been recorded on this New Year in Ahmedabad,” said Jashvant Prajapati,Chief Operating Officer of GVK EMRI.
