The Vadodara Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Wednesday arested the in-charge executive engineer of the Irrigation Department for taking a bribe of over Rs 2 lakh from a contractor.
ACB officials laid a trap in the office of the accused,Dipak Punjabhai Brahmbhatt,at Kuber Bhawan in Vadodara and caught him while accepting money from a contractor.
According to the ACB officials,the complainant,Madan Jain,a contractor from Bharuch,had worked for check dams near Naswadi on Men River at Simol village
for Rs 2.5 crore.
Jain had submitted fixed deposit and performance bonds to the Irrigation Department in Vadodara. After completion of the work in March,he visited the Irrigation Department almost everyday to get his bonds back and for the clearance of bills. However,the accused,a deputy engineer holding additional charge of the executive engineer,told him that everything will be cleared if he paid him Rs 4.5 lakh, said J R Tiwari,Assistant Director,ACB.
Jain first lodged a complaint in this regard. Then on September 19,he told Brahmbhatt over the phone that he would pay him Rs 2 lakh.
Jain also told him that the balance money would be paid after his bills were cleared, said Tiwari.
Brahmbhatt had asked Jain to bring additional Rs 10,000 along with the fixed amount of Rs 2 lakh on Wednesday.
