Six people were killed and seven others were injured after a speeding truck crashed into a stationary luxury bus on the Vadodara-Ahmedabad Expressway near Anand early on Monday. The truck driver has been detained by the police.

Superintendent of Police G G Jasani told The Indian Express that the accident occurred around 4.45 am when the luxury bus travelling from Mumbai to Rajasthan halted in the right lane of the expressway to repair a flat tyre and the speeding truck rammed into the rear of the bus. “While two people, who were repairing the tyre, were killed due to the collision, the impact caused the bus to tilt and overturn, crushing at least three passengers, who were sitting on the divider. Eight others were rushed to the private hospital for treatment,” said Jasani.

The Anand rural police has also initiated a probe to ascertain if the negligence of the deceased bus driver and cleaner, who were repairing the tyre, led to the accident. “The bus had a flat tyre and ideally they should have moved to the extreme left lane for repairs but they decided to repair the bus in the (speed) lanes. Since the time was about 4.45 am, which is the twilight hour, the truck driver may have missed the people standing around. We have begun the process of the FIR. We are also inquiring into the exact sequence of events and if it is felt that more people should be named as accused. We will add the names in the FIR,” Jasani said.

Teams of the emergency medical services and the Anand Fire Department rushed to the spot to pull out the bodies from under the bus. The accident also caused a traffic jam on the expressway, which was cleared after the bus was pulled to the side with the help of a towing vehicle.
