Thakur storms into quarter-finals

Continuing his fine form in the tournament, Aryan Thakur rallied into the quarter-finals with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Virinder Singh in the boys’ U-14 category in the AITA Talent Series (TS-7) Tennis Tournament being played at Chandigarh Club on Friday.

Playing with control, Thakur won the opening set 6-0 in the pre-quarter match before claiming the second set 6-1 to seal his spot in the quarter-finals. In another match in the same category, Rakshit Dhankar ended the challenge of Paras Chauhan with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 win. Dhankar won the opening set 6-3 before Chauhan staged a comeback in the match to win the second set 6-3. The third set saw Dhankar dominating the proceedings and the youngster claimed the third set 6-3 to enter the quarter-finals.

It was joy for Sarabjot Singh as he scored a 6-1, 6-1 win over Aaryan Chhatwal in the same category. Singh won the opening set 6-1 before winning the second set with an identical margin. Navya Verma showed his mettle in the match against Sainyam Madaan as Verma scored a 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) win to enter the quarter-finals. Verma won the opening set 7-5 before winning the second set 7-6 by winning the tie-breaker 7-4 to advance further in the tournament.

In the boys’ U-16 singles’ category, Aryan Thakur once again showed his superb form and carved out a 6-2, 6-2 win over Navya Verma. Thakur claimed the opening set 6-2 before winning the second set with an identical margin to enter the quarter-finals. Himanshu Sharma had to fight his way hard to score a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 win over Avish Verma.

Sharma won the opening set 6-4 before Verma made a comeback in the match. Verma won the second set 6-4 to equalise in the match. Sharma won the third and final set 6-3 to seal the win. In the girls’ U-14 category, Suryanshi Tanwar ended the challenge of Vishita with a 6-1, 6-0 win to sail into the quarter-finals. Tanwar won the first set easily with a 6-1 margin before blanking Vishita 6-0 in the second set to complete the win.

It was easy going for Anusha Verma as she scored a 6-3, 6-3 win over Bhumi Kakkar. Verma pocketed the opening set 6-3 before winning the second and final set with an identical margin. In another match in the same category, Khushi Sharma ended the challenge of Noorpreet Sipray with a 6-0, 6-0 win.
