Neelkanth Mishra, chief economist at Axis Bank, has been appointed as part-time chairperson of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) while Nilesh Shah, the managing director of Kotak Mahindra Asset Management Company Ltd, has been appointed as a part-time member of the Aadhaar agency.

Mishra’s appointment as the UIDAI’s part-time chairperson means that he is now a part of some of the most high-profile government offices; he is also a part-time member of the Economic Advisory Committee to the Prime Minister (PM-EAC); and a member of the advisory committee of the India Semiconductor Mission, which vets chip applications in India.

The board of the UIDAI comprises a chairperson, two part-time members, and the chief executive officer, who is also the Member-Secretary of the Authority. Amit Agrawal, former additional secretary at the IT Ministry, was appointed as the CEO of UIDAI in June, but the other positions had been lying vacant. Prof Mausam, an associate professor at the computer science department at IIT Delhi, has been appointed as the other remaining member.

The chairperson and the members will hold office for a term of three years or up to the age of 65, whichever is earlier, said a notification by the IT Ministry on Tuesday.

The appointments come as the Centre has proposed allowing private entities to carry out Aadhaar authentication for a number of services, expanding the ambit of the use of the digital identity beyond its ministries and departments.
