Need to coordinate with states: Paswan

His other priorities include fine-turning the minimum support price mechanism and addressing the delay in disposing of cases in consumer courts.

After assuming office on Tuesday, Ramvilas Paswan, consumer affairs, food and public distribution minister, said reigning in price rise, strengthening food grain storage capacity and improving the public distribution system are going to be his priority areas.

Paswan indicated that he will not be on a collision course with state governments as he repeatedly stressed on the need for coordination with the states to achieving his goals. The UPA government often faced criticism over incidents of rotting food grains as well as some of the provisions of its ambitious Food Security Act from opposition-ruled states.

While noting that he cannot achieve wonders in a short time, Paswan said his priorities would be to eliminate “irregularities ” in the PDS, creating adequate storage capacity to address the issue of food grains rotting in the open and addressing the issue of price rise.

“The issues of ending price rise and corruption in fact are the main priorities of the government itself. The Cabinet will formulate the policies. I cannot decide on the policies,” he said. “Food grains purchased by the government should not rot,” he added.

His other priorities include fine-turning the minimum support price mechanism and addressing the delay in disposing of cases in consumer courts.
