The Emergency: 50 Years On

Fifty years ago, on the night of June 25, 1975, the Indira Gandhi government invoked Article 352 of the Constitution to declare Emergency on the grounds of “internal disturbance” – the first and only time this clause was used in Independent India. As press censorship followed, The Indian Express defied threats and odds to bring to readers the trampling of democracy. This series captures 21 months of a State at its worst, and a people at their finest.
