Som Prakash is a bureaucrat turned political leader and a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. He is the incumbent Member of the Parliament from Punjab’s Hoshiyarpur seat. He was born on April 3, 1949, in Daulatpur, East Punjab, to his parents, Hazara Ram and Mahon Devi. He completed his M.A. in Economics from Punjab University.
He embarked on his professional journey as a research officer in the Punjab State Planning Board in 1972. His commitment to public service saw him rise through the ranks, serving as an Excise and Taxation Officer and Assistant Excise and Taxation Commissioner from February 1980 to May 1993.
His bureaucratic career was marked by several critical positions in the Punjab government, including Joint Secretary of Agriculture, Secretary of the Rural Development Board, Deputy Commissioner of Faridkot, Hoshiarpur, and Jalandhar, and Managing Director of the Punjab Financial Corporation. He also served as the Director of Social Security, Punjab, Labor Commissioner, Punjab, and Chief Administrator of Punjab Urban Planning and Development Authority (PUDA), Mohali.
