A local politician from Malad was booked for allegedly duping a model of Rs 35 lakh on the pretext of investing her money in his business and helping her file a sexual assault case against her former husband.

According to the police, the 37-year-old complainant, a resident of Malad (West), stated that she met her former husband in 2023 through a social media application. He claimed to be working as a chief engineer in the Merchant Navy. The two later entered into a relationship that culminated in marriage.

The complainant alleged that a few months after establishing physical relations, the man abruptly cut off contact with her. She became mentally disturbed and allegedly attempted to end her life by consuming sleeping pills, as mentioned in the FIR.

After she was discharged, the accused persuaded her to file a police complaint against her former husband, assuring her of help in the matter. He subsequently demanded money, and she allegedly paid him Rs 10 lakh. An FIR was registered against her husband at the police station concerned in May 2025. Thereafter, the accused allegedly demanded more money, and the complainant said she gave him an additional Rs 5 lakh.

The accused also claimed to be involved in the footwear business and allegedly convinced the complainant to invest more money, promising returns. As per the FIR, between 2024 and July 2025, the complainant invested a total of Rs 20 lakh in the business but did not receive any profits.

When the complainant recently demanded the return of her money, the accused allegedly threatened her and refused to repay the amount.
