Dadupur-Nalvi irrigation scheme: Haryana landowners who want to reclaim land will now have to pay 12% interest

Haryana government de-notified Dadupur-Nalvi irrigation scheme in 2019 following objections by the Comptroller and Auditor General and decided to return the land to the land owners or their legal heirs.

On Friday after a two-hour long meeting at Haryana Niwas in Chandigarh, Khattar had said that it was the “final meeting” with Punjab over the issue while Mann had said that his state does not have “a single drop of water to share”.

"From our side, this was our final meeting (with Punjab). If the Centre wants another meeting, it can do so. As far as we are concerned, there is no reason in taking any more initiative," Khattar said after the meeting .

Haryana constructed the portion of SYL canal in its territory. However, Punjab, after the initial phase, stopped the work, leading to a spate of litigations. The apex court had first decreed the suit of Haryana in 2002 asking Punjab to honour its commitments with regard to water sharing in the case.

The controversial 1981 water-sharing pact came into being after Haryana was carved out of Punjab in 1966. For effective allocation of water, SYL canal link was conceptualised and both states were required to construct portions within their territories.
