Om Puri: A Legacy in World Cinema Om Puri (1950-2017), a towering figure in Indian and international cinema, left an indelible mark on the world stage. His prolific career spanned over four decades, encompassing a vast array of roles in Hindi, and several other regional languages, as well as international productions. A recipient of two National Film Awards for Best Actor, two Filmfare Awards, and the Padma Shri (1990), Puri's contributions to cinema were internationally recognized, culminating in an honorary OBE in 2004. Puri's versatility shone through in his diverse roles. He seamlessly transitioned between author-backed performances in critically acclaimed films like Aakrosh (1980), Arohan (1982), and Ardh Satya (1983), and light-hearted characters in comedies such as Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro (1983), Chachi 420 (1997), and Hera Pheri (2000). His collaborations with directors Shyam Benegal and Govind Nihalani were particularly fruitful. His memorable television roles in Sadgati (1981) and Tamas (1987) further solidified his reputation. His international acclaim grew with roles in films like My Son the Fanatic (1997) and East Is East (1999), earning him a BAFTA nomination.
