Fishermen in Rameswaram wary of venturing into polluted sea waters

Rameswaram, Feb 28 (ANI): Untreated sewage, factory waste and other pollutants have turned the waters of Agni Tirtham beach in Rameswaram into black sludge. The fishermen community in Tamil Nadu’s Rameswaram complained that their repeated pleas to clean the beach and its surroundings have fallen on deaf ears. With garbage floating on the water, it has become difficult for fishermen to go fishing. The farmers also fear that the chemicals from factory waste could prove hazardous. Water pollution not only affects fishermen directly but the untreated sewage and chemicals endanger marine life. The fishing community in turn incurs huge loss as more and more fish die due to polluted water.

Pakistan arrests 88 Indian fishermen for territorial violation

Karachi, Feb 21 (ANI): Pakistan's marine forces have arrested 88 Indian fishermen and took sixteen boats into custody for allegedly violating the country's territorial waters in the Arabian Sea. A police official said the fishermen, who were arrested on Friday night, have been handed over to Docks Police Station in Karachi for necessary legal action. The arrested fishermen were charged under the Foreign Act and Fisheries Act. The fishermen, who belong to Gujarat, will be produced them before a magistrate on Sunday. India and Pakistan share an extensive oceanic border with each other which is poorly defined, resulting in fishermen on both sides inadvertently crossing over to the other side while netting their catch.

Vizag (AP), Feb 08 (ANI): Navy Chief R K Dhowan on Monday assured the country that sailors stay alert and awake on the International water boundaries so that people of the country can sleep peacefully. Speaking about the Mumbai terror attacks, Dhowan said that there have been a lot of changes after 2008 to ensure the safety of the citizens. He added that adequate measure have been taken to mark the identity of fishermen of every state departing from their ports to earn their livelihood without any problem.
