How UK media tracked Britain’s referendum result: Close race between Remain and Leave

The voting for the Britain’s historic referendum on whether to leave the European Union ended on Thursday. The Counting began immediately with the final results expected Friday morning.

The earlier results indicated that ‘Remain’ had taken a lead. However the Sunderland result challenged the earlier indications, predicting a neck to neck race.

A look at how the some of the media publications have been tracking the referendum:

THE SUN

The Sun took the bolder option, its “Brex Mad” headline talking about the high turnout but then adding at the top, “Farage concedes to remain”.

METRO

Metro took a similar approach as that of the Sun, leading on Farage’s apparent concession. It gave the headline that said, Farage: I think it’s all over.

The Daily Telegraph

The Daily Telegraph, on the other hand focused on the aftermath, and a letter from 84 pro-Brexit Tory MPs calling for David Cameron to stay. It reaa: David Cameron has a “mandate and a duty” to continue as Prime Minister, Mps and Cabinet members said last night in an attempt to unite the party following the EU referendum.

THE GUARDIAN

The Guardian took the headline, ‘party leaders reach out to divided nation after bitter EU referendum’. It talks of a wider need to heal and reunite, both as a nation and with the EU. It said, David Cameron and Jeremy Corbyn are preparing to reach out today to millions of British people who voted to leave the EU, as they seek to heal the wounds of a bitterly fought referendum that has divided the nation.

DAILY MIRROR

Daily Mirror has termed the referendum as ‘Project Reunite’. The Guardian and Daily Mirror, by contrast, talk of a wider need to heal and reunite, both as a nation and with the EU. It goes on to say that as Farage all but concedes defeat..and after the fear and hate..Britain needs Remain and Leave supporters to start the healing process.
