The US president has mocked Mamdani’s line of ideas earlier and nicknamed him “my little communist”.
As New York City mayoral election is around the corner, US President Donald Trump’s criticism of Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani has doubled down as he reiterated his claim that NYC leader is a “communist” and turned down the arguments of him being compared with Mamdani.
During an interview with CBS’ 60 Minutes, interviewer Norah O’Donnell asked Trump about Mamdani’s NYC mayoral candidature and his identity which he self-declared as a socialist. Trump intervened Norah and appeared to be correcting her, when he said “Communist, not a socialist, he’s far worse than a socialist.”
In a teaser clip of his interview on 60 Minutes on Sunday night, Trump was asked about the comparisons and similarities between the US president and the 34 year-old New York City mayoral frontrunner Zohran Mamdani. Norah asked, “Some people have compared him to a left-wing version of you: charismatic, breaking the old rules.” Responding to the question, Trump said, “Well, I think I’m a much better looking person.”

The remarks by the US president come just a day ahead of New York City’s mayoral election, which is scheduled for November 4. Democratic candidate Mamdani has based his campaign on ideas like free bus rides and freezing the rising rent. The US president has mocked his line of ideas earlier and nicknamed him “my little communist”.
Ever since Mamdani defeated former governor Andrew Cuomo in the mayoral primary in June, Trump has been critical of the Democratic leader and in one of his Truth Social post wrote, “He looks TERRIBLE, his voice is grating, he’s not very smart, he’s got AOC+3, Dummies ALL, backing him, and even our Great Palestinian Senator, Cryin’ Chuck Schumer, is groveling over him.”
The early voting has been ongoing in New York City with the final day of voting scheduled on Tuesday. According to a latest Fox News poll, Mamdani has a 47% to 31% advantage over Cuomo in the mayoral polls.
