Police on Sunday booked the manager and security staff of a popular restaurant in North Goa for allegedly assaulting a family from Uttar Pradesh, who had come to Goa on vacation.

The family members alleged that the manager, a waiter and some bouncers assaulted them after a miscommunication over a leftover drink and a chair.

A member of the family said in a complaint to police that a bouncer slapped her and tried to pull her shirt, while her brother was hit by an iron pole.

According to police, the family from Varanasi went to the popular club near a beach for dinner on Saturday, at around
11.30 pm.

In the police complaint, the complainant said that after entering the restaurant, the family took a table. Some leftover food and drinks had been kept at an adjacent table, whose patrons had already left. One family member, who arrived late, assumed that the family was sitting at both the tables and picked up a leftover drink from the adjacent table. “As soon as this happened, the manager arrived and started abusing and shouting. [He]…said he will throw us out. We apologised to him and asked him to include the leftover drink in our bill, and we paid for it,” the complainant said.

Later, at around 2 am, when the family was about to leave, one of the members “accidentally pushed the chair aside,” which led to the manager hurling abuses at them, the complainant said. She said the manager, waiter and some bouncers then arrived and started assaulting one family member with fist blows and slaps.

She alleged that when they got near the entrance of the restaurant, one of the bouncers hit her brother with an iron pole on his chest and back and broke his spectacles. She claimed that she tried to intervene, but the “bouncer tried to pull my t-shirt and slapped me on my face” and hurled abuses at her.
