Lalit Modi row: Left MP seeks censure motion against Sushma Swaraj

An Opposition MP submitted a notice for a censure motion against External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, claiming alleged “improprieties and illegality” on her part in helping former IPL chief Lalit Modi.

Sources in the Lok Sabha secretariat said that the Speaker had sent the notice, given by RSP MP N K Premachandran, to both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Swaraj, seeking their comments on it.

This development in all likelihood will force the PM, who has so far maintained a silence on the controversy, to express his views on the matter.

Premachandran’s notice cited six grounds, including “conflict of interest, violation of oath of office (because she was doing an undue favour for a person having a fugitive status)”. The MP, it stated, wants the House to record “indignation and disapproval of the conduct of the minister.”

Sources said that the censure motion was being used to try and express no confidence in Swaraj as a Cabinet minister. According to sources, the RSP MP had consulted the Congress floor managers before submitting his notice.

A censure motion means an expression of strong disapproval or harsh criticism against the policies of the government or a minister. If admitted, it will be discussed under Rule 184, which means a debate with a compulsory voting.
