IN A scathing attack on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said the Trinamool Congress (TMC) had become a government of terror, maut (death) and corruption. Mamata’s “ma, maati, manush” slogan had changed to “maut and money”, the Prime Minister said at an election rally.

Several leaders of opposition parties had earlier criticised Modi’s previous visits to the state, saying he had never directly taken on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and alluding to a tacit understanding between the BJP and the TMC. On Thursday, Modi didn’t leave any issue unaddressed — from Saradha scam, Narada sting and the more recent collapse of an under-construction flyover in the heart of Kolkata, he touched upon all to attack Mamata.

But most blistering was his attack on the alleged corruption in TMC. Modi said that even after several top ministers in Mamata’s cabinet, and several senior party MPs and MLAs were shown purportedly accepting bribes in a sting operation, she is quiet. “Didi has now adjusted with corruption. Why this parivartan didi,” he asked a cheering packed house at Polo Ground.

Modi said Mamata had ended the 34-year Left Front rule with several promises but had betrayed the people of West Bengal. “Have you forgotten Saradha? Those involved in it should have been in jail,” he said. “Didi should have been sterner. But instead she had been favouring them,” he said, before quickly pointing out that while the TMC had fostered chit funds, the Central government had started the PM Jan Dhan Yojana.

On alleged corruption that many believe led to the Vivekananda Road flyover’s collapse, leaving more than 25 people dead, he said, “Under the Left Front, we had scientific rigging. Now, under Didi, there is scientific corruption. We have seen how ministers promise to allot tenders in favour of firms which meet their demands (referring to a TV channel sting operation). The collapse of the flyover has exposed her in that area as well.”

“Worse”, he said, instead of ensuring quick action by the recovery team, she reached the site and immediately blamed the Left for allotting tender to a corrupt company. “Had the flyover been completed, would she not have inaugurated it and claimed credit for it,” Modi asked.

Modi also trained his gun at the Congress-Left Front alliance and said that for decades the Congress had been blaming the Left parties but is now sitting at Left’s foot for the sake of sheer existence. “If it is an issue over principles, then it should be uniform…Kerala mein kushti aur Bengal mein dosti (They are wrestling in Kerala and are friends in Bengal),” he said.
