A day after around 100 Dalit families from Bhagana village in Hisar district claimed to have embraced Islam at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, members of Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad held a panchayat where it was stressed that the families should reconvert.

Leaders of VHP said they were in talks with the families and that they would reconvert.

The Dalits who have converted did not return to the village today.

The sarpanch of the village, Rakesh Panghal, said though he did not attend the panchayat, the situation in the village was peaceful. He said some Muslims reside in the village and there have been no problems with them.

A police official said some members of VHP and Bajrang Dal visited the village today and held talks with the villagers.

“Many of the senior panchayat members were not present. Discussion was held on reconversion of the Dalits,” he said.

Bhagana village had in April 2012 witnessed tension between Jats and Dalits after the panchayat constructed a wall, blocking access to some Dalit houses.

The Dalits also allege that accused in the gangrape of four Dalit girls of the village have also not been arrested. They have demanded that they should be allocated plots in the village that were promised to them.
