Meerut Zone IG Alok Sharma told The Indian Express that Gupta had access to Asaram’s room and knew every minute detail about his activities. Gupta had recorded his statement before the court and his further statements could have caused trouble. Therefore, this appears to be a possible motive behind his murder, said Sharma.
One witness in the case had already been killed, while two others were attacked earlier, he added.
The officer also said Gupta was running a dairy since he shifted to Muzaffarnagar. Station Officer, Nai Mandi police station, A K Singh said they were trying to talk to the family.
Singh added that Gupta was shot from behind and suffered bullet injuries near his chest. He further said that they suspect .12 bore country made pistols were used in the crime.
Singh also said the family has mentioned in the complaint that Gupta was a witness in the case against Asaram.
