THE FINAL-YEAR student of Bachelor of Social Work (BSW)) in Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), who was shot dead on the campus on Friday night, had taken part in a protest march earlier in the day against Hindu Yuva Vahini (HYV) leaders, who had termed AMU as a “nursery of terrorism”.
Following his death at J N Medical College on AMU campus, students did not allow the police to take Alamgir’s body to custody. The victim’s family eventually took the body to their native place in Saharanpur on Saturday morning without a postmortem being conducted.
According to AMU officials, a group of unidentified youths had shot Alamgir near the computer centre on the campus. He was taken to the medical college where he died during treatment around 10 pm.

SP (City) Brijesh Kumar Singh said J N Medical College authorities allowed the police to see Alamgir only once when he was undergoing treatment at the ICU. “Later, a mob of hundreds of students gathered outside the hospital… they did not allow the police to enter the hospital. I requested the hospital authorities to hand over the body for postmortem but it was not done. The parents took away the body early morning,” Singh said.
However, Aligarh SSP J Ravindra Gaud denied that he had information that the postmortem had not been conducted. “Doctors would have handed over the body to the parents after completing the legal formalities,” he said.
Alamgir’s brother Jahangir has got an FIR lodged against four former AMU students — Shadab, Rehan, Munir Khan and Ashutosh Mishra — said Circle Officer (City) Rajiv Kumar. Mishra is currently lodged in Aligarh jail. All four had entered into altercations with Alamgir several times earlier on the campus, police said.
After Alamgir’s death, some students demanded that the university be closed sine die. On Saturday, some even circulated a message on WhatsApp stating that ‘Namaz-e-Janaza (funeral prayer in absentia)’ of the slain student will be held at 1 pm at the vice-chancellor’s lodge. The university administration, however, denied the same and no student was allowed to offer namaz.

Later, AMU authorities claimed “some mischievous elements, taking advantage of Alamgir’s demise had tried to create chaos at the campus by circulating the message on WhatsApp”.
“Taking a serious note of this, Vice-Chancellor Lt Gen (retd) Zameer Uddin Shah has said that such attempts to close the university sine die will be dealt with sternly. The V-C has said that the mischievous elements tried to collect a mob at his residence and vitiate the atmosphere,” AMU spokesperson Rahat Abrar said in a written statement.
In a separate statement, the V-C said: “We are determined that the university continues to function in a normal manner. Any sine die closure at this juncture will totally be against the interests of the institution.”
He added that AMU will demand a CBI probe into the incident. “A formal request in this connection will shortly be made by the university,” said Shah. The V-C added all precautionary measures will be implemented and security at the campus tightened with the police and university’s security personnel holding joint patrols.
