Jammu and Kashmir Lt Governor Manoj Sinha said Monday that the 350 houses in Jammu that were completely damaged in the recent natural calamities and cross-border Pakistani shelling during Operation Sindoor will be rebuilt free of cost.
Announcing this after laying the foundation stone for the new houses, he said the entire construction cost of Rs 35 crore will be borne by a non-governmental organisation High-range Rural Development Society (HRDS India). The three-bedroom prefabricated smart houses are slated for completion within six months from the start of the foundation work.
He said the houses are designed to be efficient, modern, resilient and technologically advanced, and will include specific facilities such as cowsheds. Expressing gratitude to HRDS for the initiative, the Lt Governor said that apart from construction, the NGO is also providing a welfare package to beneficiary families. This includes free life insurance coverage for all family members for the next 15 years, free annual health check-ups and maintenance of the houses for the next five years.
Reiterating his commitment to bringing a monumental change in the lives of the poor, Sinha said: “In the last 5 years, lakhs of poor have been benefited, and infrastructure in backward and poor regions have been upgraded. The rapid development of Jammu is unprecedented, and we have achieved a strong growth trajectory despite numerous challenges”.
Calling Jammu a sacred city of temples, he said his administration has been consistently working to develop it into an inclusive urban centre. Concrete steps taken for all-round development have helped realise the dream of poverty alleviation, social justice and equal opportunities for all, he added.
He stated that a new era of accelerated economic development and social transformation has begun in the region, claiming: “We have achieved a massive scale of project completion in a short span. These projects have significantly strengthened Jammu’s urban infrastructure and citizen-centric services, enhancing mobility through modern amenities and streamlined civic facilities, and improved urban aesthetics”.
The Lt Governor also lauded the exceptional coordination by the district administration and various agencies in relocating affected populations to safer locations and ensuring their continued care in the aftermath of the calamity. He praised the response of the Divisional and district administration, police, Army, CAPFs, Disaster Response forces, emergency responders, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, civil society members and volunteers during rescue and relief operations.
He said 4,309 beneficiaries in Jammu district received assistance and Rs 8.22 crore was distributed as compensation. Ex-gratia and a government job were also provided to the next of kin of a civilian who lost his life during unprovoked Pakistani firing during Operation Sindoor.
Sinha interacted with beneficiaries and reaffirmed the Government of India and UT administration’s commitment to the complete rehabilitation of affected families, including 23 hit by landslides in Rah Salyote village, who have been receiving food and temporary accommodation for the last three months.
