THE son of Gaya JD(U) MLC Manorama Devi is alleged to have shot dead a youth following a row over overtaking on the Bodhgaya-Gaya road on Saturday evening. Rocky, 30, is absconding since the incident. An FIR has been lodged against Rocky, his bodyguard Rajesh Kumar and two others who were reportedly in the car with him at the time of the incident. Police have arrested Manorama Devi’s husband Bindi Yadav as well as Kumar. The Land Rover that Rocky was said to have been in at the time was impounded from the MLC’s Gaya residence on Sunday morning. The victim, Aditya Sachdeva, was 20. The son of a Gaya businessman, he had finished his Class XII CBSE board exams and was waiting for the results. Somewhere in the Rampur police station area, Rocky reportedly got into an argument with the occupants of a Maruti car, including Aditya, who was sitting on the back seat, for not letting his vehicle pass. [related-post] There was firing in the air from inside the Land Rover. Police say Aditya mistook the gunshot for a car tyre bursting, and he and his friends got off to check near Gaya police lines. Rocky is alleged to have also stopped the Land Rover, and along with Kumar, got into an argument with them. “Witnesses said that after the scuffle, Rocky, who was carrying a licensed pistol, fired at Aditya, who died on way to a Gaya hospital,” said Rampur police station SHO Shankar Gupta. Rocky is also alleged to have fired at the Maruti car while driving away, leaving a bullet hole in its rear glass. Gupta said they were treating it as a case of road rage, though they were also looking at other possibilities. Police will be matching the bullet that killed Aditya with the guns of Rocky and his bodyguard, amid conflicting versions on who opened fire, said an officer. Manorama Devi said Rocky had been preparing for the civil services examination in Delhi and had come to Gaya for a break. Bindi Yadav, a former Gaya zila councillor who was with the RJD before switching sides to the JD(U) and wields considerable clout in the area, defended Rocky, saying the death could have been due to “unintentional firing for self-defence”. Gaya SSP Garima Malik said they had arrested Bindi because of “inconsistencies” in his statement. Aditya’s father Shyamsunder Sachdeva has a good business in PVC pipes. Aditya’s elder brother Lalji said, “Everyone knows my brother was killed by Bindi Yadav’s son. It is a pure case of road rage. Aditya would seldom ask for a vehicle. As he was waiting for his Class XII results and wanted a break, we allowed him to visit Bodhgaya with some friends.” Gaya residents blocked traffic in town for several hours demanding Rocky’s arrest. The BJP, that has called a Gaya bandh on Monday, said the killing was another evidence of the return of jungle raj under the JD(U)-RJD regime. Said BJP state president Mangal Pandey, “We have been saying for a while that rule of law has gone for a toss. An MLC’s son takes law into his hands just near Gaya police lines. CM Nitish Kumar has been out on politcal tourism and should resign as things are threatening to get out of his hands.” BJP legislature party leader and former deputy CM Sushil Kumar Modi said, “There have been several cases of ruling parties legislators and their kin throwing their weight around. Bindi Yadav, who had gone to jail under the Crime Control Act, has again cocked a snook at the rule of law, with his son killing someone just for overtaking his car. The CM should explain why such a person was given bodyguards and a pistol licence.” JD (U) Rajya Sabha MP Ali Anwar promised that guilty would not be spared. “No one is above the law. It does not matter which party he owes alligiance to. Our police acted swiftly and recovered the car and made arrests.” Deputy CM Tejashwi Prasad Yadav of the RJD said, “No one belonging to any party and enjoying any political clout will be spared. More arrests will take place as the investigation progresses.” WATCH INDIAN EXPRESS VIDEOS HERE
