ON SATURDAY, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu inaugurated an institute in Visakhapatnam where leading IT companies will train students in managing a niche technology, called Blockchain, to protect the government’s large database of digitised records.
“Andhra is rapidly digitising all its departments and it’s for the first time in India that a state government is opting for this technology. Blockchain is a complex and expensive technology that is known to be a foolproof system to prevent cyber crime and hacking,” J A Chowdury, IT advisor to the Andhra government, told The Indian Express.

Chowdury said that this technology (see box) has already been introduced, on a pilot basis, in two state government departments — Civil Supplies and Land Registration. “Discussions have started on introducing this technology in other departments, too. We will assess the performance in these two departments first. It will take up to six months to cover all government departments,” he said.
According to Civil Supplies Secretary D Rajasekhar, the Andhra government maintains a database of 1.3 crore ration cards, 4.5 crore individual records, and lakhs of digitised records of all departments.
Chowdury said that the state government is moving to tie up with various IT companies to help impart training on this technology at the institute. “There are very few people available currently with indepth knowledge of this technology, which is why we are tying up with these companies to help us introduce Blockchain and train our people. Last week, we conducted a workshop on this technology in Visakhapatnam in association with IBM,” he said.
