A Nightmare on Elm Street

26 years later, the only thing you can ask of A Nightmare on Elm Street is,“Why?”

The first time,26 years ago,it surely must have been a hair-raiser: a guy who cut you up in your dreams with blades attached to his glove. Now the only thing you can ask of A Nightmare on Elm Street is,“Why?”

A rare example of a film being remade after even its sequels have stopped holding interest,A Nightmare… looks jaded and stale, with a bunch of Hollywood wannabes filling in for roles one of which marked Johnny Depp’s first major film appearance.

You are startled, and you do jump when Freddie Keuger (Haley) catches his victims and slashes them up. But that’s to be expected. You do hope to come to care for the friends whose nightmares he inhabits, who still venture out into the night unfailingly. But that’s not to be. You wish their parents, with a secret as guilty as that, would be quicker to notice what’s happening in their homes. But that’s not to be. Finally, all you wish is the end doesn’t promise a sequel. Even that’s not to be.
