Unidentified persons attacked and murdered Avinash Chandrakant Tekawade (42), a Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) corporator from Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), Thursday afternoon. Police have initiated probe to identify the assailants and ascertain the motive behind the attack.
A resident of Gawli Wada in Mohan Nagar, Chinchwad, Tekavade had survived an attack in 2013. Tekavade, who has a crime record, was booked in seven offences of rioting and murder.
The police said because of construction work at Tekawade’s house, he was at present staying at a rented apartment in Ganesh Angan, Mohan Nagar.
“He left his residence around 2 pm. Due to power cut, the lift was not working, so he came down the stairs. Suddenly, unidentified persons, who hid near the staircase, trapped Tekawade and attacked him with sharp weapons. The assailants threw chilli powder in his eyes and then stabbed him, leaving him in a pool of blood. The assailants fled the spot by jumping over the compound wall of the apartment,” said the police.
Tekwade was rushed to a private hospital in Chinchwad, but he died in the course of treatment. Senior police officers, including Deputy Commissioner (zone III) Basavraj Teli, visited the crime scene.
A case of murder was lodged at the Pimpri police station. The police, as well as crime branch teams, initiated probe into the case. The police are investigating if the murder was a fallout of any past rivalry or was there any other reason.
The police recovered a sharp weapon reportedly used for the attack, footwear and a two-wheeler without a number plate during investigation. They are scanning video footage captured by CCTV cameras around the crime scene. Most cameras were not functioning due to power cut at that time.
The murder, however, created panic in Mohan Nagar for some time. Political activists and Tekawade’s supporters gathered in large numbers. Some shop owners shut their operations. Police force were deployed in the area to maintain law and order.
Tekwade had won the civic elections from the NCP ticket in 2012. Tekawade had undertaken a project of CCTV camera installation in his ward. He had plans to complete and inaugurate the project in a few days. As per police records, he was involved in six offences of rioting, murder and attempt to murder. In October 2013, three persons had attacked him in a similar manner. He had then survived the attack with minor injuries.
