Once popular amongst youngsters, many 30 plus citizens are also now eager to get all ‘marked up’

Up a narrow winding staircase in a room lit by neon lights and a lot of psychedelic colours,a 30-something woman is getting her arm tattooed by a serious looking tattoo artist with heavily arched brows. Welcome to a world where the mantra reads,‘Old is the new Young’; welcome to a world where people in their 30s consider it cool to have tattoos.

Sourabh Pardeshi, owner of ‘Sabby’s Tattoo Studio says,“Tattoos have been around since forever. It’s only the techniques that have changed and have improved over time. Moreover with changing times people have started changing and earlier what was considered to be an act of rebellion associated with wild teenagers is now considered a fashion statement and more importantly a symbol of something that a person strongly identifies himself or herself with, and is very close to his or her heart. In fact we have a lot of people who are either in their early thirties or even late thirties who get tattoos done on their body.”

Speaking more about the tattoos he says,“Most of the 30+ people who come in here to get tattoos done usually get tattoos of names of people mostly spouses,or portraits of people. In addition to these they also go in for various complicated looking tribal pieces, mantras, religious symbols, pictures of gods and goddess and also Chinese and Japanese lettering. We usually make it a point to ensure that the customer has his or her own needles, which we provide for the first time, and then they can use it repeatedly. Moreover we also make use of the StarBright ink for tattooing which is actually used internationally and is even showcased on the television programme Miami Ink.”

P Kaiummy, who has been an avid tattoo lover since her childhood says,“I have always been fascinated by tattoos ever since my childhood. Moreover I had always wanted to get them all over my body because for me they were a medium to express myself.

As of now I have full-length tattoos done along the length of my arm,and also a tattoo done on my back. on my arm I have a tattoo of Tara the love goddess,a picture of Buddha’s hands holding onto a lotus, and an evil eye to guard me from evil people and another picture of Tara the love goddess on my forearm. In addition to these I have a picture of an angel coming out of a genie’s lamp on my back.”

Yogesh Aphale,a 32-year-old businessman says,“I personally find the idea of having pictures all over my body really cool as a result of which I decided to get tattoos on my body. As of now I have four tattoos on my body,of which one is a eagle, another one is three X’s tattooed on the back of my neck like Vin Diesel had in the movie Triple-X and two abstract designs on my chest and my forearm. I love having abstract things drawn or in general anything that is abstract. These two tattoos signify that for me.” Rohan Haval,an IT professional says,“I have a lion tattooed on my thigh. There is something about a lion which speaks of aristocracy and royalty.”
