Harsher winter awaits parts of Northwest, North and Central India regions as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast above-normal coldwave days during December – February.

“Above normal coldwave spells will affect Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha and Marathwada regions of Maharashtra during the winter season. Coldwave episodes can last longer than normal,” Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director General,IMD, said in New Delhi Monday.

Mohapatra was speaking during the monthly temperature and rainfall forecast release for the winter season. He said the cold wave spells can last up to 11 days, compared to the normal 4-6 days.

The Met office said that colder days during this season could be linked to the prevailing weak La Nina conditions. La Nina, the cooler-than-average sea surface temperatures over the Pacific Ocean, is often linked with harsh winters.

In addition, the development of polar vortexes along the north pole could influence the temperatures over India. During polar vortex events, strong cold winds from the poles descend towards southern latitudes.

The day temperatures over central, northwest and north India will remain below normal during the impending season, he said. The IMD has, however, predicted a warm winter over the northernmost parts and northeast India. It said above normal minimum temperatures will affect Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, west Rajasthan, parts of Bihar, north Jharkhand, West Bengal, Sikkim and the entire northeast India this winter.

During December, cold wave spells lasting longer than average will affect northwest, central and northeast India, IMD said. Coldwave spells lasting six days could affect Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, west Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab and parts of eastern Maharashtra.
