The Punjab Housing and Urban Development Department has issued a public notice on the proposed land acquisition for Sector 87, the remaining portion of Sector 101, and Sector 103 in Mohali. Of these, Sector 87 is planned to be developed on the lines of Chandigarh’s Sector 17, while Sectors 101 and 103 are designated for industrial development.

According to the department, the acquisition process has formally advanced with the initiation of the Social Impact Assessment (SIA) under Section 4 of the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2011.

The notification for this process was issued on October 24. As per the mandate of the Act, Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU), Amritsar, has been entrusted with conducting the SIA to evaluate the potential impact of the proposed acquisition on the villages and families whose land falls within these sectors. The department emphasised that the entire SIA process will be carried out transparently, with public feedback being given top priority. Residents have been urged to present all facts clearly when the survey team visits their villages.

As per the notice issued by the Land Acquisition Collector, the expert team from GNDU will visit Mankmajra, Nanumajra and Sohana on December 22, followed by Sambalki, Durali and Saneta on December 23.

During these visits, the team will interact with villagers to assess how the acquisition may impact local residents, farmers, businesses and the socio-economic structure of the region. Their findings will include details of potential losses, community needs, objections, suggestions and expectations of the affected families.

Officials from the Housing and Urban Development Department stated that once the study is completed, the report will be submitted to the government. Following this, the next stages including public hearings, scrutiny of objections, and the issuance of the final notification will proceed as per the provisions of the Act.
