AICC general secretary Digvijaya Singh Monday said the Congress was against interference with any court judgment and that it did not distinguish between terror acts on the basis of caste, religion or community. He said the Bharatiya Janata Party was handling the case of Yakub Memon and that of Hindu fundamentalists differently.

“There is a debate going on over the capital punishment handed out to Yakub Memon, who has been convicted in the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts. We do not differentiate on the basis of caste, religion or community of terrorist. However, the BJP is handling the Yakub Memon issue differently than the way it is handling the cases related to Hindu fundamentalists accused in other terror acts,” Singh said, addressing party workers in Pune. He said the BJP-led government was protecting those hurting the trust of Muslims.

“This has enabled the All India Majlis-e-Ittehandul Muslimeen (MIM), which is grabbing the opportunity to push its agenda. We must not forget that the fundamentalist thinking gives birth to terrorists,” Singh said, adding that the MIM had started instigating the Muslims and the BJP was trying to make indirect gains by the division of votes due to it.

On the stalemate in the Lok Sabha, Singh said the BJP was justifying corruption by not making its tainted leaders quit from their respective positions.

“The difference between the Congress and the BJP rule is that the Congress made the ministers accused of corruption resign while the BJP does not believe in that,” he said, adding the Congress was firm on its demand for the resignations of External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.

“It is surprising that Modi who used to comment on everything now prefers to maintain silence on serious issues that involved his party leaders and ministers,” Singh added.
