Cracking the whip against government officers found slacking in the implementation of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan in Delhi, Lt-Governor Najeeb Jung on Wednesday asked that a deputy commissioner, two assistant engineers (AE) of the Public Works Department (PWD) and principals of two schools be suspended.
Jung, with a team of officials from Raj Niwas, set out on surprise checks at 9.30 am. They visited eight hospitals, six schools and 20 deputy commissioner’s offices. “These visits will become a weekly affair. I, along with my officers, shall be leading these visits every week,” Jung said.
Jung visited the Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital in Khichripur, where he monitored the cleanliness of public areas, reception, and wards. He also visited the Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya, Kalyan Vas and Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya, Kalyanpuri, where he inspected the condition of toilets.
Displeased with officials for taking inadequate steps to keep their premises clean and sanitised, Jung directed the chief secretary to issue a showcause notice to the municipal deputy commissioner of Civil Lines and written warnings to the municipal deputy commissioner (Shahdara South) and the medical superintendent of NC Joshi Hospital, Karol Bagh.
Jung also directed the suspension of Shahdara North deputy commissioner, the respective AEs (PWD) in-charge of maintenance of Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya, Bharat Nagar and Sarvodaya Vidyalayas, Sector-6, Rohini.
Others facing suspension include the principal of Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya, Wazirpur, and the principal and vice-principal of Sarvodaya Bal Vidyalaya, Rani Jhansi Road. The Lt-governor also directed that the principal of Sarvodaya Vidyalaya, Sector 6, Rohini, be transferred. Jung directed the cancellation of the cleanliness contract at Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital, Rohini.
Jung said the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is an important mission and anyone found lacking won’t be shown mercy. “Let this be a warning. More action will follow,” he said.
The Lt-Governor’s office will send a report to all departments stating the action they are required to take under the cleanliness campaign.
On Tuesday, the Delhi government appointed Gitanjali Gupta Kundra as the officer on special duty, Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. The government appointed a senior secretary-level IAS officer as the nodal officer for implementing the mission, Raj Niwas sources said.
