The lynchings happened two days after an 11-year-old boy was found dead with cut marks on his body in Mohanpur, just 25 km from state capital Agartala, and rumours spread that his kidneys had been removed.
A vendor from Uttar Pradesh, a musical instrument teacher, a vagabond woman and a mentally challenged woman were lynched and at least 20 people including railway officials, workers and women were assaulted by mobs in different incidents in Tripura on Wednesday and Thursday.
Tripura lynching: The deceased has been identified as Zahir Khan (30) of Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh. Gulzar Ahmed Khan and Khurshid Khan from Bihar and Swapan Miya from Agartala were among those injured. Police are yet to give further details about the injured.
The temple, situated in Udaipur, 55 km from Agartala, is considered one of the 51 Shakti Peethas — significant pilgrimage destinations for Hindus.
Jiten Chowdhury, who is also the president of the party's tribal wing Gana Mukti Parishad (GMP), said the BJP-IPFT government should declare the areas as "distressed" and take appropriate measures without any delay.
Biplab Kumar Deb also cleared the formation of an 11-member executive committee of the trust, with the district magistrate and collector, DFO, Gomati and SDM, Udaipur as members, an official release said.
The two major rivers of Tripura, Gomati and Haora, are flowing below the danger level. However, around 17,480 people are still housed in relief camps in the four districts.
