The Opposition Congress and JD(S) have brought Karnataka Assembly to a standstill over the past three days, demanding a CBI probe into decisions that have favored businesses run by friends and relatives of ruling BJP members, including Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa.

The ruling BJP has refused to budge on the issue, agreeing to a general discussion citing a judicial probe ordered by the CM but offering no other leeway.

On Wednesday, even as the government tried to push ahead on its own with the business of legislation,JD(S) MLAs tried to march into the House blowing conches and carrying documents of alleged land deals authorised by the CM to favour his family. With the Congress already staging a protest,Speaker K G Bopaiah adjourn the House for the day.

Signs of the session turning into a logjam were evident in the run-up to the session with Congress and JD(S) citing the impasse in Parliament and suggesting a similar tit-for-tat situation over corruption in Karnataka. It became clearer when the Opposition shouted down Governor H R Bhardwaj on the opening day on January 6,saying he must not praise a number one corrupt government.

By its indifferent and adamant attitude towards the Oppositions demand and the manner in which the ruling party has been managing the House, the BJP has converted the Assembly into an arrack shop, JD(S) leader and former CM H D Kumaraswamy stated. Yeddyurappa has called the Opposition stalling of the House undemocratic.
