A day after the Army said two of its porters were killed in cross-border firing in the Macchil sector along the Line of Control, the claim came under scrutiny after family members of the porters alleged that the two men were killed in a fake encounter and the initial post-mortem report said they were shot from “very close range”.

The Army is already probing the killing of three men in an alleged fake encounter recently. Described as infiltrators, they had been buried as unidentified militants.

The post-mortem of the two porters was carried out after family members alleged that they had been killed a fake encounter and refused to bury them without an autopsy. The families brought the bodies to Kalaroos for post-mortem.

“We carried out the autopsy of the two porters. Our initial finding is that they have been shot at from a very close range,” Dr Firdous Ahmad,Block Medical Officer,Kalaroos, told The Indian Express. Asked what he meant by “very close range”,Ahmad said “distance of less than 25 metres”.

The Army maintained that the two porters were killed when Pakistani troops opened fire in violation of the ceasefire. “The two porters were injured when Pakistani troops opened fire at 7.30 in the morning. Two of our jawans were also injured,” said Defence spokesman Lt Col J S Brar. “The two porters later succumbed to injuries while the jawans were evacuated to the base hospital in Srinagar,” he said.

BMO Ahmad said the autopsy was carried out by a team of two doctors,Dr Khaliq and Dr Mukhtar, and they found a bullet in one of the bodies. “We are sending the bullet for forensic examination,” he said. “We have also taken DNA samples.” He said the porters had received multiple injuries, mostly in their limbs. “One of them even had a head injury.”

Kupwara SP Uttam Chand said: “I haven’t received the post-mortem report yet. We will base our conclusion only after we receive the final report.”

JAMMU: Within 24 hours of its troops violating the ceasefire in Kashmir’s Macchil sector on Sunday,Pakistani Rangers targeted the Border Security Force’s Abdullian border outpost (BOP) along the international border in R S Pura sector near here. The ceasefire violations come ahead of Union Home Minister P Chidambram’s visit to Pakistan this week.

A BSF spokesman attributed the firing by Rangers as an attempt to push in armed militants. The firing, which started at 4 am,continued at intermittent intervals till afternoon, with the BSF retaliating.

There was no loss of life or damage to property on the Indian side. Sources said there was also an IED explosion near the International Border, though there was no damage. — ENS
