First under Mamata: 2 injured in police firing

In the first case of firing on agitators in West Bengal after Mamata Banerjee took over as the chief minister,police shot at and injured two people protesting.

In the first case of firing on agitators in West Bengal after Mamata Banerjee took over as the chief minister,police shot at and injured two people protesting against alleged eviction of land patta holders and fish pond owners in Haroa,North 24-Parganas on Saturday.

The police fired when an angry mob,allegedly back by a group of CPM workers,attacked the police.

Tension had been simmering for the past couple of days after the villagers started agitating against alleged eviction of land patta owners and fish pond owners of the area by local Trinamool Congress leaders.

On Saturday,a clash broke out between Trinamool and CPM supporters over a fish pond. A huge police force was rushed to the spot. The CPM workers and some villagers then allegedly pelted stones at the police,leading to the firing.

Though Siddhinath Gupta,DIG,Presidency range,denied receiving any report of police firing,North 24-Parganas Trinamool chief Nirmal Ghosh confirmed it.
