Fight with ex may send Mel Gibson behind bars

Gibson can face upto four years in prison if convicted in an assault case filed by his ex,Oksana Grigorieva.

Hollywood actor Mel Gibson is set to face upto four years in prison as the Los Angeles deputy district attorney’s office is reportedly preparing to file criminal charges against him for allegedly assaulting ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva.

Despite the actor-director’s lawyer Blair Berk’s meeting with Los Angeles deputy district attorney John Lynch for close to two hours to persuade them otherwise,it is thought the office will bring charges against Gibson, reportedTMZ.

The 55-year-old Oscar-winning actor could face anything from one to four years behind bars after being accused of breaking two of Grigorieva’s teeth at their Malibu home in January last year.

The Russian singer, who is the mother of Gibson’s one-year-old daughter Lucia, has claimed that the actor punched her in the head on January 6,during a row at his Malibu home, damaging two of her front teeth.

The 40-year-old had also claimed she was holding Lucia, then just two months old,in her arms at the time of the assault. “Blair is aware that the District Attorney is inclined to file charges against Mel. The District Attorney (DA) has a very strong case, there is a lot of information that the public and Mel Gibson are unaware of,” said a source in the DA’s office.

The legal system in America means that a charge could be brought either as a felony or a misdemeanor with the former carrying a prison sentence of four years if Gibson is found guilty. If convicted of a misdemeanor he could receive a one-year sentence in a county jail.

In a sworn declaration Gibson, who is currently locked in a battle with Grigorieva over custody of Lucia, confessed to “slapping” his ex-girlfriend once with an open hand. However,he has denied hitting her with a closed fist,as she had claimed.
