At least 33 people were killed and 40 wounded when a crowded public transport bus skidded off the road and fell down the hill near Khahare village, around 65 km from here Monday.

About 85 passengers were seated in the bus, which was bound for Ramechhap district and fell 300 m down the hill. The roads were in a bad shape due to the heavy rains over the past few days.

An Army chopper has been pressed into service but adverse terrain was making the rescue difficult, an official said.

About two dozen of the injured are receiving treatment at hospitals in Kathmandu and the adjoining Kavre district.

An eyewitness said that many passengers have been squeezed by the bus wreckage.

Prime Minister Prachanda directed concerned stakeholders, including the government bodies, to intensify rescue mission.
