Amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, with armed group Hezbollah and Israel exchanging fire over the southern Lebanon border, the United States on Tuesday said it has indications that Iran is preparing to “imminently launch a ballistic missile attack against Israel”.
While warning that “a direct military attack from Iran against Israel will carry severe consequences for Iran,” a senior White House official asserted that the US is “actively supporting preparations to defend Israel against this attack.”
However, Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesperson Daniel Hagari has stated that the military has not yet identified any aerial threat from Iran.
Following US’ indication of an imminent missile attack, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has asked the people of Israel to heed safety instructions from the home front command.
The warning follows Israel’s announcement that its commando and paratroop units launched raids into southern Lebanon in a limited incursion as it pursues strikes against Hezbollah militants that have killed the Iran-backed group’s leader and senior commanders.
In a counter-claim, Iran-backed Hezbollah said it fired missiles at the headquarters of Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency, blamed for assassinations of Hezbollah commanders and leaders, and at a military intelligence unit on the outskirts of Tel Aviv.
The US military had on Sunday warned Iran against expanding the conflict and said it was increasing air support capabilities in the region and putting troops on increased readiness.
