Judge sets January 10 date for sentencing Trump in hush money case but rules out prison term

Donald Trump is set to be sentenced on January 10 for his hush-money case in New York, just before his anticipated inauguration as president. This comes after Trump failed to have his conviction overturned, with the judge signaling that he won’t face prison time.

Justice Juan Merchan has indicated that Trump is unlikely to face jail time, probation, or a fine. Instead, the judge is expected to grant a “conditional discharge,” meaning Trump could avoid serious penalties. Trump may attend the sentencing either in person or virtually, as reported by BBC.

The case stems from a $130,000 (£105,000) payment made by Trump’s former lawyer, Michael Cohen, to adult-film star Stormy Daniels during the 2016 election campaign to prevent her from speaking out about an alleged affair with Trump. Trump was convicted in May of 34 felony counts for falsifying business records connected to the payment.

Trump has consistently denied any wrongdoing, arguing the case is politically motivated and aimed at damaging his 2024 presidential bid. His spokesperson, Steven Cheung, condemned the legal proceedings as a “witch hunt” and insisted that Trump should not be sentenced while he is preparing for office.

Despite his legal challenges, Trump has been advised that a delay in sentencing could be an option until after his presidential term ends in 2029. However, Justice Merchan ruled that the conviction was valid and that the case would move forward, although Trump may still attempt to appeal the verdict after sentencing.

Trump, 78, is currently set to become the first convicted felon to serve as president. He faces additional legal battles, including charges involving classified documents and efforts to overturn the 2020 election results.
