Russia-Ukraine war would not have happened if Trump was President in 2022: Putin in Alaska

The highly anticipated summit between President Trump and Putin ended with no agreement to resolve or pause the three and half years old Ukraine war.

Standing alongside US President Donald Trump after their first meeting since the latter returned to power, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Saturday that he believed the war in Ukraine would never have begun had Trump remained in the White House after the 2020 election.

“Today, when President Trump says that if he was president back [in 2022], there would be no war — and I’m quite sure that it would indeed be. I can confirm that,” Putin said, according to the BBC.

The remarks capped a long-anticipated meeting in Alaska that failed to produce any agreement to end or even pause the conflict, now in its third and a half year, despite both the leaders describing the talks in Alaska as “productive”.

After concluding the three-on-three talks, where Trump was being accompanied by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and his envoy Steve Witkoff and Putin was joined by Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and presidential adviser Yuri Ushakov, both the leaders held a joint press conference for about 10 minutes. However, none of them took questions from the reporters.

Putin and Trump agreed that both the leaders have made progress on unspecified issues after holding nearly three-hour talks. However, none of them detailed the specifics and none took questions from the press after completing their press conference.

“There were many, many points that we agreed on. I would say a couple of big ones that we haven’t quite got there, but we’ve made some headway,” Trump said, adding “There’s no deal until there’s a deal.”

Putin, on the other hand, cautioned Ukraine and the European leaders to accept the results of the US-Russia negotiation constructively and not try to “disrupt the emerging progress.”

“I expect that today’s agreements will become a reference point, not only for solving the Ukrainian problem, but will also launch the restoration of business-like, pragmatic relations between Russia and the United States,” Putin said.

Putin, while reiterating his point, said the “root cause” of the Ukraine conflict must be must be eliminated to reach a long-term peace, which suggested that the Russia leader remains resistant to a ceasefire.
