US President-elect Donald Trump has appointed billionaire investment banker Warren Stephens as the next United States ambassador to the United Kingdom, a prestigious role often reserved for close allies and major donors.

In a post on his Truth Social platform on Monday evening, Trump announced the nomination, describing Stephens as someone who has “always dreamed of serving the United States full-time.”

He added, “I am thrilled that he will now have that opportunity as the top diplomat, representing the USA to one of America’s most cherished and beloved allies.” The appointment will require Senate confirmation.

Stephens, a prominent Republican donor, contributed $2 million to a pro-Trump super PAC during the 2024 campaign. He is the chairman, president, and CEO of Stephens Inc., a financial services firm based in Little Rock, Arkansas, which he inherited from his father.

This announcement comes as Trump continues to fill key Cabinet and diplomatic positions, often drawing from a pool of loyalists and significant contributors. Over the weekend, he revealed plans to nominate Charles Kushner, the real estate developer and father of his son-in-law Jared Kushner, as ambassador to France.

During Trump’s first presidency, the position of US ambassador to the Court of St James’s was held by Robert “Woody” Johnson, a campaign donor and owner of the New York Jets football team.
