US President Donald Trump on Wednesday threatened that his administration will soon introduce a 25% tariff on imports from the European Union, which he claimed was “formed to screw the United States”.
“We have made a decision, and we’ll be announcing it very soon, and it’ll be 25% generally speaking, and that’ll be on cars, and all of the things,” Trump told reporters during his first cabinet meeting.
“The European Union was formed to screw the United States – that’s the purpose of it and they’ve done a good job of it,” Trump said. “But now I’m president.”
The EU currently imposes a 10% tariff on passenger cars, four times higher than the US tariff of 2.5%. US officials have also raised concerns about European value-added taxes, which start at 17.5%.
The European Union is the US’s third-largest trading partner, alongside China. President Donald Trump has announced that he will impose 25% tariffs on the country’s two largest trading partners, Canada and Mexico, next week.
However, his appearance raised questions about his trade strategy, as he hinted that the tariffs on Mexican and Canadian imports, scheduled to take effect on 4 March, could be postponed once again.
