FILE - Chairlifts of a ski lift are photographed at the Astum ski resort in Huesca, northern Spain (AP)At least 30 people are reported to have been injured, 17 of them seriously, after a ski lift collapsed in northern Spain on Saturday.
The incident took place at a resort in the Aragon region of Spain on Saturday, the regional government said.
Images and videos circulating on social media show several people lying injured on the snow beneath the collapsed ski lift. Meanwhile, around 80 people remain stranded on the chairlift, suspended in the air, state TV channel TVE reported.
“It’s like a cable has come off, the chairs have bounced, and people have been thrown off,” a witness told TVE.
The cause of the cable failure is still under investigation.
The resort management declined to comment and could not confirm whether any foreigners were among the injured. Spain Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed his concern, saying he was “shocked” by the news of the incident.
Helicopters are actively working to rescue those trapped on the chairlift and transport the injured to nearby hospitals, news agency Reuters reported.
Located near the French border in the Pyrenees mountain range, the Astun ski resort is a popular destination for Spanish skiers.
