The Capela neighborhood, where the plane crashed, is located in a district on the outskirts of the prosperous city, which has a population of 77,000 residents.
A passenger plane carrying 62 people crashed in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, on Friday, killing all passengers and crew.
“There are no survivors,” Col Emerson Massera of the Brazilian military police was quoted as telling reporters at the crash site in Vinhedo, The Guardian reported.
Massera also confirmed that the fire has been brought under control but noted that around 50 firefighters remain at the scene to cool down the area. “It’s a very sad scene; our work now is focused on clearing the area so that the investigation and identification of the bodies can proceed,” he said.
Operated by Voepass Linhas Aéreas, ATR-72 aircraft was en route from Cascavel, in the state of Parana, to Guarulhos, in Sao Paulo, when it went down in Vinhedo, website G1 said, citing Voepass.
Voepass confirmed that 58 passengers and four crew members were on board the plane.
Firefighters, military police, and the civil defense authority dispatched teams to the crash site in the city. Authorities have sealed off access to the residential area where the plane went down.
According to Flight Radar, the aircraft plummeted 4,000 feet in just two minutes from its 17,000-foot altitude, after which its GPS signal was lost.
Video footage shows the plane descending rapidly before impact, followed by a large plume of smoke.
