Democratic presidential nominee and US Vice President Kamala Harris and Oprah Winfrey attend a campaign event in Detroit, Michigan, U.S., September 19, 2024. (Reuters)American TV host Oprah Winfrey has denied reports which suggested she was paid $1 million by the Kamala Harris campaign for an event, saying she was never “paid a personal fee”.
Winfrey’s production banner Harpo Productions said that Harris’ campaign paid for the production cost of the event without mentioning any amount.
According to a statement by Harpo’s spokesperson, “The campaign paid for the production costs of ‘Unite for America,’ a live-streaming event that took place Sept. 19 outside Detroit, Michigan.” The spokesperson added saying “Oprah Winfrey was at no point during the campaign paid a personal fee, nor did she receive a fee from Harpo,” as reported by Variety.

The filings at the Federal Election Commission showed that the Harris campaign paid Harpo Production $500,000 twice on October 15. While some outlets went on to say that Winfrey was paid personally to appear and endorse the Vice President, the Harpo Production categorically denied the claims and stated that the campaign paid for the costs of the town hall, without giving a specific figure.
During the ‘Unite for America’ event, Oprah Winfrey interviewed Kamala Harris and asked her questions regarding abortion rights and immigration. According to Examiner, the Harris campaign paid a total of $15 million as “production fees”, including a $1 million payment to Harpo Productions for the ‘Unite for America’ live-stream during the 2024 presidential run.
