New Orleans Saints and NFL pledge $1 million donation to Bourbon Street attack victims

Half of the donation, $500,000, will be distributed through the Greater New Orleans Foundation (GNOF) and United Way, which are assisting the victims and their families.

The New Orleans Saints and the NFL have announced a joint $1 million donation to support the victims of the New Year’s Day truck ramming attack on Bourbon Street.

The tragic incident, which took place on January 1, claimed 14 lives, and at least 35 others sustained injuries when the suspect, identified as Shamsud-Din Jabbar, allegedly drove a pickup truck into crowds of revellers celebrating the New Year.

The FBI has confirmed it is treating the incident as a terror attack. Law enforcement and intelligence agencies have expressed concern over the potential for copycat attacks.

Saints owner Gayle Benson expressed the team’s sorrow, saying, “Our community has experienced an unimaginable tragedy, and our collective hearts are broken as we mourn for the victims and survivors of this horrific attack in New Orleans”, as reported by ABC News.

Half of the donation, $500,000, will be distributed through the Greater New Orleans Foundation (GNOF) and United Way, which are assisting the victims and their families.

The NFL Foundation, the league’s charitable arm, has also pledged to match the Saints’ contribution. Commissioner Roger Goodell added, “The NFL is committed to standing with the resilient community of New Orleans during this difficult time”, ABC News reported.

As of the latest update, 13 of the 14 victims have been publicly identified, with ages ranging from 18 to 63.
