Suspect Luigi Mangione is taken into the Blair County Courthouse on December 10, 2024, in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania. (AP photo)Luigi Mangione, the 26-year-old Ivy League graduate charged with the murder of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Manhattan last December, has shared his first public message since his arrest, reported The Independent. The statement comes as Mangione, who faces criminal charges in New York, Pennsylvania, and federal court, remains in custody awaiting trial.
In response to what his legal team described as the “extraordinary volume of inquiries and outpouring of support,” a dedicated website has been set up for Mangione.
Mangione’s case garnered national attention after writings found on him during his arrest outlined his grievances with the healthcare system. This has contributed to a surge in public interest, leading to widespread support for Mangione, despite the serious charges he faces.
Breaking his silence, Mangione expressed gratitude for the support he has received. “I am overwhelmed by – and grateful for – everyone who has written me to share their stories and express their support,” he said in his statement, as per The Independent. “Powerfully, this support has transcended political, racial, and even class divisions, as mail has flooded MDC from across the country, and around the globe.”
Mangione added, “While it is impossible for me to reply to most letters, please know that I read every one that I receive. Thank you again to everyone who took the time to write. I look forward to hearing more in the future.”
The website also includes an FAQ section, where his legal team asked the public to refrain from sending Mangione books for the time being, noting that he has already received a large number. Similarly, they requested that supporters limit the number of photos they send, with the team stating, “Luigi appreciates the photos that are sent and kindly asks that people send no more than five photos at a time,” as per the reports from The Independent.
In terms of his legal defense, Mangione has raised nearly $400,000 in donations.
He has pleaded not guilty to Thompson’s murder.
Mangione was arrested on December 10 in Altoona, Pennsylvania, following a dramatic six-day manhunt. In Pennsylvania, he faces charges including carrying a gun without a license, forgery, and other related offenses. He was extradited to New York on December 19 after waiving his right to an extradition hearing.
Mangione’s next court appearance is scheduled for February 21 in New York, where he faces 11 charges, including first-degree murder in furtherance of terrorism, second-degree murder in furtherance of terrorism, and multiple weapons offenses.
