Iran says ‘movement forward’ in second round of nuclear talks with US

“I can say that there is movement forward. We’ve reached better understanding and agreement on some principles and goals in these Rome negotiations,” Araghchi told reporters after the talks.

A third round is expected soon, Iran’s foreign ministry said, though no date has been formally announced.

The discussions mark a rare diplomatic thaw between two nations long locked in a cycle of hostility over Iran’s nuclear ambitions. The US has repeatedly demanded that Iran halt the production of highly enriched uranium, which it believes is part of an effort to build a nuclear weapon — a claim Tehran denies.

Iran, while insisting on its right to enrich uranium under international law, has signalled it is open to compromises in exchange for sanctions relief to help stabilise its struggling economy.
