Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has said that he doesn’t think SpaceX CEO Elon Musk will use his close ties with US President-elect Donald Trump to undercut his space tech company Blue Origins and feels “very optimistic” about the Trump administration’s space agenda.
During an interview with Reuters, Bezos whose company Blue Origins rivals with Musk’s SpaceX said “Elon has been very clear that he’s doing this for the public interest and not for his personal gain. And I take him at face value.”
Blue Origin is making its delayed debut in the satellite launch business as Bezos is in Cape Canaveral, Florida for the launch of New Glenn, a 30 story-tall rocket which is expected to chip away some market share of dominant company SpaceX in this sector.
Musk donated over $270 million in order to help elect Trump and has been the ears of the president-elect on matters related to space.
In December, raising the industry concerns of a major overhaul in NASA, Musk said that the US should send missions directly to Mars first, instead of targeting the Moon.
Bezos, when asked about changes to NASA’s Moon program, said “My own opinion is that we should do both – we need to go to the moon and we should go to Mars.”
“What we shouldn’t do is start and stop things. We should continue with the lunar program for sure,” Bezos further added.
Republican leader Donald Trump, in his second tenure which begins from January 20, is poised to overhaul NASA’s Moon program and focus on missions being sent to Mars, Reuters reported.
