— The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has adopted a resolution to declare December 21, observed as Winter Solstice, as World Meditation Day.
— In 2014, India took the lead in declaring June 21 as the International Day of Yoga.
Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas 2025: Stating that the country has just started its journey towards Viksit Bharat in the Amrit Kaal, Jaishankar said the endeavour (to make India a developed nation) is very much about the future generation.
— The Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) is observed once every two years on January 9th. The 18th PBD 2025 was organised in collaboration with the State Government of Odisha from 08-10 January 2025 in Bhubaneswar, Orissa.
— It was celebrated under the theme, “The Diaspora’s Contribution to a Viksit Bharat,” with a considerable number of members of the Indian diaspora from over 50 different countries having registered to participate in the PBD Convention.

— The Global Space Exploration Conference (GLEX) 2025 was held in New Delhi for the first time from May 7 to 9, 2025, with the theme of “Reaching New Worlds: A Space Exploration Renaissance.”
— The third United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3) was held in Nice, France, from June 9 to 13, 2025. France co-host the event with Costa Rica. The theme of the conference is “Accelerating action and mobilizing all actors to conserve and sustainably use the ocean.”

—The Artificial Intelligence Action Summit, co-chaired by India and France, was held in Paris on 10 and 11 February 2025.
— This was the third AI summit after the United Kingdom in 2023 and in Seoul, South Korea in 2024. The 2026 AI Summit will be hosted by India.

— The first Assembly of the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) was held in New Delhi on June 16, presided over by the Union Minister for Environment, Forests and Climate Change, Bhupender Yadav.
— On January 23, the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA), launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2023 for the global conservation of seven big cats, formally became a full-fledged treaty-based intergovernmental organization.
— It is an initiative launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in April 2023 in Mysuru commemorating the 50th anniversary of Project Tiger.
— The objective of the IBCA is to ensure cooperation for the conservation of seven big cats: lion, tiger, leopard, cheetah, snow leopard, jaguar, and puma, and enhance knowledge exchange and threats associated with them.

POLITY
— The government has formally announced that the 16th Census of India will take place in two phases, with the reference dates set as March 1, 2027, for most of the country and October 1, 2026, for snow-bound and remote regions. This Census will include the first nationwide caste enumeration since 1931.

BIHAR SPECIAL
— The Central Government has announced the establishment of the first Small Modular Reactor (SMR) in Bihar. It is expected to be located in Nawada district.
150 locomotives will be supplied to Guinea in three years.
— Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the first locomotive for export, manufactured in the Diesel Locomotive Factory at Marhowrah in Bihar’s Saran district on June 20.

— Railway Locomotive factory Marhowrah (Saran), Bihar will supply 150 Evolution Series ES43ACmi locomotives for SimFer’s Simandou iron ore project in Guinea, Africa, worth more than INR 3,000 crore.
— Chief Minister Nitish Kumar approved the “Mukhya Mantri Pratigya Yojana” on 1st July, 2025. It is an internship scheme promising a monthly stipend to those in the 18-28 age group, who have completed skill development training or possess educational qualifications ranging from class 12 to postgraduate degrees.

— On 24th June, 2025, the Election Commission announced a “special intensive revision” of the electoral roll in poll-bound Bihar. In Bihar, the last summary revision was done in 2003.

— Article 324(1) of the Constitution gives the ECI the power of “superintendence, direction and control of the preparation of the electoral rolls for, and the conduct of” elections to Parliament and state legislatures.
— Under Section 21(3) of The Representation of the People Act, 1950, the ECI “may at any time… direct a special revision of the electoral roll for any constituency or part of a constituency in such manner as it may think fit”.
— Bihar Diwas 2025 was celebrated from March 22 to 24 at Gandhi Maidan, marking the 113th anniversary of the state’s formation.
— The event, inaugurated by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, embraced the theme “Unnat Bihar, Vikasit Bihar” (Advanced Bihar, Developed Bihar).

— This year, seven people were conferred with the Padma Vibhushan, 19 were awarded the Padma Bhushan and 113 received the Padma Shri, with 139 awardees in total. The highest number was in the category of arts (51).

— The size of Bihar’s economy at current prices has increased 3.5 times, rising from Rs. 2.47 lakh crore in 2011-12 to Rs. 8.54 lakh crore in 2023-24.
— Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) of Bihar in the financial year 2023-24 is estimated at Rs 8,54,429 crore at current prices and Rs 4,64,540 crore at 2011-12 constant prices.
— The per capita GSDP in Bihar at current and constant (2011-12) prices is estimated to have increased by 12.8 percent to Rs. 66,828 and by 7.6 percent to Rs. 36.333, respectively, in 2023-24 over the previous year.
— The Gross Fiscal Deficit (GFD) of the State government in 2023-24 was Rs. 35,660 crore, which is 20.4 percent less than the GFD of Rs. 44.823 crore in 2022-23.
— The Primary deficit also decreased by 39.1 percent to Rs. 18,054 crore in 2023-24 from Rs. 29,640 crore in 2022-23.

— The Nitish Kumar-led NDA government in Bihar tabled a Rs 3,16,895 crore Budget for 2025-26 on 3rd March, 2025.
— Education has got the maximum allocation to the tune of Rs 22,700 crore in the Budget. The health department has remained among top five priority areas of the Nitish government since 2005-06, getting an allocation of Rs 10,298 crore this time.
— In line with the Nitish government’s focus on women empowerment, the Budget has proposed establishment of a “mahila haat (women’s marketplace)” in Patna, setting up “pink toilets” in all districts and running “pink buses” in major cities.
— Samrat Choudhary also proposed the setting up of “Kanya Vivah Mandaps” in all panchayats to “help poor rural families with girls of marriageable age”.
ECONOMY
— It projected a growth rate of 6.3-6.8 per cent for 2025-26 on the back of a “strong external account, calibrated fiscal consolidation and stable private consumption”, much lower than what is needed to become a developed country
— The Survey has flagged two main concerns: rising trade protectionism leading to stagnation in the global economy and the dominance of China as the world’s manufacturing superpower.

— The Budget lists four engines of development that are agriculture, MSMEs, investments, and exports. The Budget aims to initiate transformative reforms across 6 domains: Taxation, power sector, urban development, mining, financial sector, and regulatory reforms.
— The Finance Minister has announced that a Makhana Board will be established in the state of Bihar to increase the production, processing, and value addition of Makhana.
— In a major reform, the FDI limit in the insurance sector has been raised from 74% to 100%.
— Expenditure of major items in the Budget: Defence (4,91,732 Cr) > Rural Development (2,66,817 Cr) > Home Affairs (2, 33, 211 Cr) > Agriculture and Allied Sector (1,71,437 Cr) > Education (1,28,650 Cr).
Science and Technology
On December 30, ISRO put two satellites — SDX01, the Chaser and SDX02, the Target — in a low-Earth circular orbit and later set them apart at a distance of around 20 km in space. (ISRO)
— SpaDeX mission was lifted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota on December 30 by PSLV-C60 and successfully placed two satellites in the desired lower earth orbit.
— The SpaDeX or Space Docking Experiment is key to ISRO’s future missions – sample return from the Moon, an Indian on the Moon, the building and operation of the Bharatiya Antariksh Station (BAS).
— The success of this mission will make India the fourth country in the world with space docking technology – after Russia (the former USSR), US and China.
— Two small satellites– the SDX01 Chaser and SDX02 Target, injected in a 475-km circular orbit after the launch, will demonstrate the docking.
— The United States Food and Drug Administration on Thursday approved a new type of non-opioid painkiller, Suzetrigine.
— Opioids are a class of drugs that “derive from, or mimic, natural substances found in the opium poppy plant”. Some common opioids include oxycodone, morphine, codeine, heroin, and fentanyl.
— The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) has developed the world’s first genome-edited (GE) rice varieties with superior yields, drought and salinity tolerance, and high nitrogen-use efficiency traits. They are named ‘Kamala’ and ‘Pusa DST Rice 1’.
— They have bred improved GE mutants of the popular Samba Mahsuri (BPT-5204) and Cottondora Sannalu (MTU-1010) varieties using CRISPR-Cas SDN-1 (Site-Directed Nucleases-1) technologies.
— A team of researchers from the Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences (SKUAST) in Srinagar has produced India’s first gene-edited sheep.
— Danish pharma giant Novo Nordisk has launched weight loss drug Wegovy. Ozempic is also developed and manufactured by Novo Nordisk.
— US-based pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly has also launched its diabetes and weight-loss drug named Mounjaro.

— The Axiom-4 Mission was launched on 25th June, 2025. Shubhanshu Shukla became the second Indian to travel to space and first to reach the International Space Station. He came back to Earth on July 15, 2025.
— There are three other astronauts on the mission: Peggy Whitson from America as commander of the mission, Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski from Poland, and Tibor Kapu of Hungary.
International Relations
— Nigeria has conferred its second-highest national award, the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger, on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, making him the second foreign dignitary to receive the distinction after Queen Elizabeth, who was conferred the award in 1969.
— Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred ‘The Order of Excellence’ by Guyanese President Irfaan Ali.
— He was awarded the highest national award of Guyana for his exceptional service to the global community, statesmanship, and contribution to deepening India-Guyana ties.
— Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred the “Dominica Award of Honour” by President Sylvanie Burton of Dominica on the sidelines of the India-CARICOM Summit.

— Brazil launched the Global Alliance for Hunger and Poverty on Friday at the G20 Summit in Rio with an initial 41 participating members.
— The members have pledged to lift 500 million people out of poverty through cash transfers and social protection systems.

— PM Modi was conferred with Namibia’s highest civilian award, the ‘Order of the Most Ancient Welwitschia Mirabilis’.
— The 6th Summit of the Heads of State/Government of the member States of BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) was held in Thailand on 4th April, 2025.
— The theme of the summit is “Prosperous, resilient, and open BIMSTEC (PRO BIMSTEC).”
— The BRICS 2025 summit of heads of state and representatives was held from 6-7 July in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The motto of the Brazilian presidency of BRICS is “Strengthening Global South Cooperation for More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance”.
— The 2026 BRICS Summit will be hosted by India.
— India has launched ‘Operation Sindhu’ to evacuate Indian nationals from Iran as fears of an all-out Israeli-American military strike on Iran increased.
— On July 24, the India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) was signed. It ensures comprehensive market access for goods across all sectors, covering all of India’s export interests.

— Indian-origin Scottish artist Jasleen Kaur has won the prestigious Turner Prize 2024 for her exhibition, “Alter Altar”, that reflects on plurality, personal and political themes.
— The Sahitya Akademi was established by Jawaharlal Nehru, who was also its first chairperson, and inaugurated on March 12, 1954.

— Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh passed away on 26th December at the age of 92. The Union government has declared a seven-day mourning period for Singh and has canceled all government programs scheduled for Friday.
— He was the chief architect of the economic reforms, particularly the LPG (Liberalization, Privatization, and Globalization) policy in the 1990s, which transformed India’s economic trajectory.
— Singh’s reforms in 1991 sought to liberalise and end the ‘Licence Raj’ through industrial policy reforms.
— Singh served as Prime Minister from May 22, 2004, to May 26, 2014, leading the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government for a historic 3,656 days. His tenure made him the third longest-serving Prime Minister in Indian history, following Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi.
— Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar was elevated to 26th Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) on 17th February 2025. Other Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu, and Vivek Joshi. Shri Vinod Singh Gunjiyal is the Chief Election Officer of Bihar.
— Former Olympic champion swimmer from Zimbabwe, Kirsty Coventry, was elected as the president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in Greece.
— In the organisation’s 130-year history, this is the first time a woman — and an African — has been elected to the all-important post.
— Japanese mathematician Masaki Kashiwara was awarded this year’s Abel Prize. He was awarded “for his fundamental contributions to algebraic analysis and representation theory”.
— The Abel prize is often considered to be an equivalent of the Nobel prize, which does not have a category for mathematics.
— Mark Carney has become the new Prime Minister of Canada after the Liberal Party won the election, marking the fourth term in the Parliament.
— Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, 69, was elected the 267th pope after two days of deliberations at the papal conclave.
— He is the first American to be elected Pope. He chose the name Pope Leo XIV as he appeared at the Sistine Chapel balcony after his election.
— Dr Ajay Kumar is appointed as the new UPSC chairperson. He succeeds Preeti Sudan, whose tenure ended on April 29, 2025.

— Thailand’s Opal Suchata Chuangsri was crowned Miss World 2025 after the grand finale in Hyderabad. Ethiopia’s Hasset Dereje Admassu was declared Miss World 2025 runner-up.
— On May 9, Lieutenant Commander Yashaswi Solankee (27) became the first woman officer to be appointed as an Aide-de-Camp (ADC) to the President of India.
— Manika Vishwakarma from Rajasthan is crowned as the winner of Miss Universe India 2025.
Sports
— D Gukesh became the youngest world chess champion after defeating defending champ Ding Liren in Singapore. He became the 18th World Champion.
— Gukesh is the second grandmaster from his country to hold the world title. Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand was the undisputed world champion for six years starting in 2007.

— Divya Deshmukh, aged 19, became the FIDE Women’s World Cup champion by defeating the veteran Koneru Humpy, 38, in the final via the tiebreakers on 28th July. She became the first-ever Indian woman to win the FIDE Women’s World Cup.
— India is the host of the FIDE World Cup 2025 to be played from October 30 to November 27. Goa will be hosting it.
— Saudi Arabia was officially announced as the host of the FIFA World Cup 2034 while the 2030 edition will take place in Morocco, Spain and Portugal.
— India pacer Jasprit Bumrah was named for the prestigious Sir Garfield Sobers Award for ICC Men’s Cricketer of the Year.
— The pacer is thus the fifth winner of the award from India after Rahul Dravid (2004), Sachin Tendulkar (2010), Ravichandran Ashwin (2016) and Virat Kohli (2017, 2018).
— At the Doha leg of the Diamond League, Neeraj Chopra breached the elusive 90m frontier with a 90.23m throw to finish second in the league. He became the third Asian and 25th man in history to achieve the feat.
— The 38th National Games were held in Uttarakhand. Services Sports Control Board (SSCB) won 121 medals – 68 gold, 26 silvers and 27 bronze – to claim the overall title.
— The tagline for the Games was “Sankalp Se Shikhar Tak” (From Resolve to Zenith) and the mascot was “Mauli,” inspired by the Monal, the state bird of Uttarakhand.
— Bihar ranked 29 with 12 medals– 1 Gold, 6 silvers and 5 bronze. Khushboo Kumari, Nikhat Khatoon, and Payal Preeti won gold for Bihar in the Women’s Triple Lawn Bowls event. Bihar won gold after 25 years.

— The 7th edition of the Khelo India Youth Games 2025 was organised in Bihar from 4th May to 15th May. It was organised in 5 cities of Bihar – Patna, Gaya, Nalanda, Bhagalpur, and Begusarai.
— Gajasimha was the mascot of the game which is inspired by Bihar’s rich history. Gajasimha is based on the elephant-lion statues found in old temples of Nalanda and Bodh Gaya from the during pala period.
— Maharashtra topped the medal table. Bihar was ranked 15th with 36 medals – 7 Golds, 11 Silvers, and 18 Bronze.
— The inaugural edition of the World Kho-Kho competition was held in New Delhi from January 13 to 19.
— The Indian women’s team won the inaugural edition after defeating Nepal. The Indian Men’s Kho Kho team defeated Nepal to win the inaugural edition.
— Royal Challengers Bengaluru beat Punjab Kings by 6 runs to win their first IPL trophy in the 18th season.
— South Africa claimed its first International Cricket Council (ICC) trophy in 27 years after beating Australia by five wickets in the World Test Championship (WTC) final at Lord’s.
— The BIHAR Sepaktakraw World Cup 2025 was held in Patna, Bihar, from March 20 to March 25, 2025.’
— Indian men’s regu (three-player) team defeated Japan to win India’s first gold medal in the Sepaktakraw World Cup. Bobby Kumar from Bihar is a member of the Gold winning team.
— Thailand topped the list while India finished fourth in the medal tally.
— India were crowned the Asia Cup Rajgir, Bihar 2025 winners after they convincingly beat South Korea 4-1 at the Rajgir Sports Complexon 7th September, 2025.
— With this win, India have qualified for the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup 2026 in the Netherlands and Belgium. Goals were scored by Dilpreet Singh (28′,45′), Sukhjeet Singh (1′) and Amit Rohidas (50′).
— With this win, India have ended the eight-year wait to regain title. They have now won the Asia Cup title four times overall, behind only South Korea’s total of five.
— The 12th Men’s Asia Cup Hockey Championship was held at the Rajgir International Stadium in Rajgir, Bihar, from 29th August to 7th September.
— The mascot of the Asia Cup Hockey, named “Chand,” is inspired by the national animal, the tiger. The name “Chand” is inspired by hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand, who created history in the game by practising under moonlit nights.
— Eight nations and 150 players participated in the championship.
